When stress or anxiety hits, and food is your go-to response, you’re probably tempted to eat something comforting. But, very often, those comfort foods are the very foods that can contribute most to weight gain because they tend to be high in fat and sugar. You’re more likely to grab a doughnut, a container of ice cream, or anything chocolate while experiencing negative emotions than you are to wolf down a mixed-greens salad.

While increased physical activity may help burn those excess calories, new research suggests that a moderate-to-vigorous exercise routine also helps prevent overeating to begin with, by reducing the effects of negative emotions on your eating habits. In a small, multilocation study performed at University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, University of South Carolina in Columbia, and University of Pittsburgh, researchers assessed the physical activity of 55 overweight and obese women before and after they participated in a three-month online behavioral weight loss program.

Using ecological momentary assessment for two weeks before the online intervention and for two weeks afterward, the researchers tracked participants’ exercise and eating habits in real time, as the women went about their lives in their everyday, real-world environments. In the final assessment, the researchers found that when the women momentarily experienced higher than usual levels of anxiety or stress, they were less likely to overeat or turn to tempting foods if they had recently increased their levels of exercise as compared to their normal level. While more and bigger studies are necessary to determine whether or not this practice can have a positive effect on weight-loss goals, this research suggests that moderate-to-vigorous exercise has a direct effect on the ability to regulate one’s eating habits during times of stress or anxiety.
