A wealthy father accused of bribing a Georgetown University tennis coach to get his daughter into the school went on trial Tuesday in the final case in the time-consuming college admissions cheating scandal.

Amin C. Khoury was charged in September 2020 with one count of bribery and one count of fraud and bribery conspiracy, for allegedly paying off the coach to flag his daughter as a tennis recruit. His jury trial is taking place at the federal courthouse in Boston.

Mr. Khoury wasn’t a client of William “Rick” Singer, who admitted to orchestrating a complex scheme to help teens get into top colleges by fraudulently boosting their SAT or ACT scores or bribing coaches to designate the teens as recruits, whether or not they played the sport. Some families worked with Mr. Singer for both parts of the scheme.

Rather, Mr. Khoury allegedly worked through a different middleman. Prosecutors said he agreed in 2014 to pay the tennis coach, Gordon Ernst, around $200,000 through a tennis recruiter in exchange for having his daughter tagged as a recruited athlete. Prosecutors said her skills were below the level typical of Georgetown recruits.

They said Mr. Khoury handed the recruiter a paper bag with $180,000 in cash in May 2015, after the daughter was admitted, with the goal of having the money passed along to Mr. Ernst. Mr. Khoury also paid the recruiter $20,000, prosecutors said.

According to an indictment, the recruiter gave $170,000 to Mr. Ernst’s wife, keeping another $10,000 for his own fee. Mr. Ernst then continued to ask Mr. Khoury for additional funds through the recruiter, prosecutors said.

Mr. Khoury’s daughter never participated in the tennis program, according to court filings. Mr. Khoury’s lawyers didn’t respond to requests for comment. They said when Mr. Khoury was charged that the teen’s college application was accurate and didn’t misrepresent her as a fake athlete. Mr. Khoury’s legal team is expected to focus its defense on fundraising practices at Georgetown. Prosecutors said there is no evidence Mr. Ernst passed any of the money along to the school.

Mr. Ernst pleaded guilty in September for his role in Mr. Singer’s scheme and for additional bribes. He is awaiting sentencing. In total, prosecutors charged 57 people in connection with the investigation, known as Varsity Blues. Most took plea deals.
