Voters overwhelmingly support the imposition of tougher curbs on junk food to tackle obesity, research shows. Eighty per cent of adults back the idea of new laws to prevent the advertising of unhealthy food to children on television and online, according to a YouGov poll for the Obesity Health Alliance.

In the survey of 2,037 adults, 58 per cent said councils should use planning laws to prevent fast-food shops opening in their area. There was 68 per cent support for expanding the sugar tax on soft drinks to cover crisps, biscuits and milkshakes and most respondents said funds raised through these levies should go towards schemes that directly help children’s health, such as sports clubs.

The sugar tax, introduced in 2018, adds 18p per litre to the price of soft drinks with more than 5g of sugar per 100ml. It is considered to have been a successful policy.

The Obesity Health Alliance, a coalition of health charities and campaign groups, said “bold action” was essential to “build on the success” of the sugar levy and reduce pressure on the NHS.

Two thirds of adults in England are overweight or obese, which is driving record levels of long-term sickness in the UK, with 2.6 million people off work. The NHS spends twice as much on obese patients per year as those of a healthy weight because of obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes.

Conservative governments have resisted interventionist policies, amid unease about imposing taxes on food and fears of “nanny statism”. Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, has promised to ban advertising junk food to children on television and via social media. Campaigners have written to all the big political parties saying it is “crystal clear” that the public would support such measures.

Katharine Jenner, director of the Obesity Health Alliance, said the next prime minister must “address Britain’s obesity crisis and redesign a broken food system that puts profit before health”.

Ben Reynolds, of Sustain, a food and farming charity, said: “Our country is flooded with unhealthy food. If it was as simple as ‘eat less and move more’, we wouldn’t have a health crisis. The public are clear about their appetite for government intervention to put health first.”

Restrictions on junk food advertising, initially due to come in this year, have been pushed back to 2025 after a series of delays and a plan unveiled by Boris Johnson to ban buy-one-get-one-free deals has been scrapped.
