Is it too much to ask that our civil service should devote their working hours to the tasks at hand? It is welcome news that the Cabinet Office minister John Glen is seeking to improve productivity across Whitehall. With our economy still teetering on the edge of recession, and taxes at levels not seen since the 1940s, Britain needs to work smarter and more efficiently wherever it can.
