Among the measures expected in this week’s Budget is yet another crackdown on waste in the public sector. Ministers have long promised greater efficiency and yet it never seems to materialise. Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, said at the weekend that one aim was to free up the police from endless form-filling so that they could focus more on crimes like burglary.
