Legacy admissions at state colleges might not be the most glaring way the government has promoted hereditary privilege. Yet the persistence of family preferences in higher education institutions is still corrosive to the principle of meritocracy. On Friday, Virginia became the latest state to prohibit its universities from providing any preferential treatment in admission decisions on the basis of an applicant’s familial relationship to alumni or donors. It should not be the last.
